Book Notes  In the last decade there has been a phenomenal growth of chess within the educational community. The Chess Instructor 2009 is a compendium of articles for chess training at all levels, with ready-to-use exercises. It aims to get chess teachers at local schools to learn from top coaches and vice versa. On his third DVD on the Spanish Opening Alexei Shirov devotes two hours of analysis to the Marshall Gambit and nearly twice that amount examining lines from the Jaenisch Gambit, the Closed Spanish, the Anti-Marshall System, as well as the Berlin Defense.
Dvoretsky’s Analytical Manual is a modern classic from which the serious student may take his or her knowledge and understanding of complex middlegame ideas to the next level.

by Nigel Davies Davies is a grandmaster who has a common touch, in that he writes at a level that can be understood by his audience. Here he advocates lines where Black plays ...e5 or ...c5 and writes, “This book is primarily aimed at players with little or no experience of the Modern Defence and who wish to get to grips with the plans and ideas. Each section begins with an introduction to the lines in question and an explanation of the strategy Black should adopt. “The illustrative games have been chosen for their instructive value and I have tried to explain the strategies for both sides. I’ve taken them from my own practice wherever possible, firstly because I understand them better and, secondly, because many of them were played against the kind of opposition that the reader may encounter. “Besides the games and explanations I’ve also included 30 test positions to help the reader get to grips with the sort of positions encountered in the Modern Defence...” He further notes that while the book is written mainly from Black’s perspectives, players from the white side can also benefit by learning what Black is trying to do to them. | | |
| | | |  Practical Endgame Play: Mastering the Basics
Efstratios Grivas As the title suggests, this companion volume to Practical Endgame Play: Beyond the Basics is a comprehensive guide to all basic chess endings. The material is divided into five sections: pawn endings, rook endings, minor piece endings, rook and minor piece endings, and queen endings. The bulk of the book (108 pages) is devoted to rook endings. Grivas relies on many of his own games for the illustrative examples, and he also includes a section of golden rules of the endgame in which he offers twenty maxims along the lines of passed pawns must be pushed. This is a worthwhile endgame manual. It is a good choice for anyone seeking practical examples of how to play basic endings. | | |
